Let us Talk Science
Let us Talk Science.
Parents & teachers mostly talk about ‘tradition, culture & rituals.’ But they do not talk about science.... science in day-today life. Our children therefore have zero curiosity about science and fail to see that their life is nothing but science.
Parents conveniently assume that to talk about science is the
prerogative of teachers.
Teachers restrict talking science to the textbook. And ''textbooks equal scoring'' is perhaps the most dangerously cherished equation.
Finally the children are lead to believe that Science is a
something that is taught in schools with the help of that particular
No one seems to be talking about it... and so we are...!
Now, we have to make even a layman aware of the fact that, he 'knows' Science. It’s always there - within him.
And then we have to motivate him to start thinking and talking about the science which he knows from his very own experience!
Let me put forth an illustration:
I am running “Gammat Shala” (Sunday Activity School) in Dombivli, Maharashtra. Our student age group is of STDs. I to IV.
In std. III classroom, we were talking about, fresh and stale vegetables. By handling and observing both types of vegetables, children found out 13 tests for a fresh vegetable.
Then I asked “What is the test for a good coconut?”
Children said, “We should shake it to find out how much water is there in it. Then we tap it lightly.”
I asked, "Why do we tap it?”
No one in my class knew.
They thought it was a ritual!!
I took a water bottle. It was half-filled. I closed the lid tightly.
Then I tapped the bottle on its bottom, & then on its upper side.
I asked children to note the typical sounds.
Then I opened the lid & tapped the bottle in similar manner.
Now the sound was different.
Then I said, “Imagine this bottle to be a coconut!
And all the children could spontaneously come out with the correct answer!
When I returned home, I asked my daughters the same questions. They complained that I had never told them why a coconut should be tapped.
For me, Gammat Shala : liberating content – Sunday Activity School is the ultimate solution for popularizing science with children.
Where they will”Learn to learn''... and will get the space to learn at their own pace”
